Debate on a Line Item

Filed in Quality Assurance 0 comments

Today was an interesting first day after we had a short break from our training.  We were all re-learning everything and it was ultimately boring in the morning.  But, as we went along with the discussion towards lunch, there was definitely a breakdown and a huge debate started.

What was the debate about? Trying to disect each line item in a Quality form that had subjective elements.

Having subjective elements in a form will definitely open up different opinions.  This is what happened this afternoon.  Everyone just couldn’t understand why that specific word means and how it can be a good call or not.  Everybody was just discussing around a subject that didn’t have a purpose.

Another way of opening a can of worms is to place yes/no scoring on these elements.  However we try to make it as objective as possible, any element that pertains to human behavior will be hard to quantify to a yes/no.  We can try to make a sense of putting some scores and weights to distinctively know the critical items, but it will always be dependent on how things are explained and if everyone is just on the same page – which is close to impossible.

But, if you are brave enough or your job entails you to create a form, then I suggest you start with a goal or a mission statement.  Without it, it is easy to create a Quality Form out of thin air but it will not be organized nor will it make sense.  Everything starts with a purpose.  Once you have this, it will be much easier to explain the rationale of any line item placed in the form.
